Modern Furniture?

The term ‘Modern’, as applied to furniture here, refers mainly to the furniture designs that were created by the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany in the period between the two World Wars. Founded by Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus school pursued innovative designs that were remarkable – especially in light of the Baroque style of furnishings that were in vogue at the time - for their clean lines and radically simplified forms, and the emphasis on functionality. The Modern Furniture Designs incorporated materials like steel, glass and plastics, creating an unheard-of feel of visual lightness and space.

The advent of the Nazis and the outbreak of the Second World War caused many of the Bauhaus designers to leave the country and immigrate to the United States. They brought their modern design concepts in this manner to a new and receptive land, where they were, variously, adapted, assimilated and transformed into further innovative concepts.

A good example of ‘Modern’ bedroom furniture is Gustav Hassenpflug’s Folding Table. When not in use, the table-top can be folded down to a mere 4 inches. Another great and space-saving furniture piece is the platform bed, originally designed by Mies Van Der Rohe . It has a simple design that looks good in any kind of bedroom and it offers storage space inside, which is a boon if you have a small area.

When we speak of ‘Contemporary‘ in furniture design, on the other hand, we mean the styles and trends that are current today. Contemporary furniture design can be inspired from modern design, from antique design, from ethnic design, from rustic design, from fine art, from nature, from technology, from just about anything out there; it can blend in a variety of ideas. If you like imaginative and creative bedroom furniture that stretches the conventional and might just border on the eccentric, then contemporary furniture is for you. Contemporary bedroom furniture seeks to extend design boundaries with startling and elegant contours, without sacrificing comfort and functionality. It is sleek, unembellished and can come in muted or bold colors. It comes in different materials – recycled steel, aluminum, chrome, glass, wood, faux-wood, and with fabrics like linen, cotton, jute, silk, organic hemp, recycled polyester fabric, wool, natural latex foam and so on – but more and more emphasis these days seems to be on staying non-toxic and eco-friendly.

You can buy expensive bedding sets, or even put them together on your own but you can also buy ones that are inexpensive and might even include curtains. This is a great idea particularly where you are trying to transition from a child’s look to the mature look that a teen wants.

5. Furniture. Furniture can be expensive, but if you shop in the right places you can drastically cut your costs and the furniture can make a big impact on the look of your bedroom. Antique furniture can give your bedroom a rich look and you can get some older beds such as brass beds  or cottage pine beds fairly inexpensively at antique shops. Try attending out any local auctions to see if they sell general household goods. You can find great deals on furniture at these because it simply depends on who happens to be there to bid up the price on you. More on Oak Furniture!

Oak has been a popular choice of timber for British furniture for hundreds
of years. It is commonly found in most parts of the UK, seasoned oak is
extremely hard-wearing and the wood has an attractive colour and grain.
Oak can be crafted into timeless pieces of unique furniture. It has both
durability and beauty, but can still have a modern contemporary feel.
Contemporary pieces are beautifully handcrafted, with simple but innovative
streamlined styles. A comprehensive range of stylish, dining, living,
bedroom and occasional furniture, all of which are available in a wide
choice of colours and finishes, makes oak furniture adaptable to a wide
range of home environments and design styles.

When contemplating investment in oak furniture, it is crucial to understand
the significance of the term solid oak furniture, rather than just
oak furniture. Solid oak furniture is generally regarded as being the
highest quality. It is made, as the name suggests, using only genuine solid
oak timbers. This usually includes the bases of any drawers and the backs of
cabinets. Joint are dovetailed wherever possible and handles / fittings are
high-quality.

Contrastingly, when used by retailers, the term “oak furniture” can include
oak mixed with ash, the sections being glued together and finished with an
oak veneer “Oak furniture” can also include items which should be classed as
“oak finish”. These are constructed from particle board finished with a wood
veneer. Since the particle board is made from shavings of many kinds,
including softwoods, it has no grain structure. This results in a far
smaller strength to weight ratio than solid timber.

Caring for your furniture.

Once you have furnishing your home you need to make sure your able to maintain your furniture, from our experience we have found wood furniture to be the hardest to keep. So here are a few helpful tips we have used over the years.

There are assortments of furniture cleaner products on the market that can remove wax buildup on wood furniture. If you have been applying a beeswax application to your solid wood furniture, than you should only have to wax the furniture once or twice a year. There are some ways you can keep your wood furniture looking great by removing the wax buildup periodically.

If the have been using beeswax products and you find ripples on your wood furniture that you are applying too much of the product. Various oils and polish should never be used over the wax coat of wood furniture. The nice thing about using beeswax is when you want to restore the original shine all you have to do is buff the furniture to restore it. You should stay away from furniture waxes that contain solvents because they can kill the lacquer finish on the wood furniture.

If it is the case that you use spray furniture polish you should know that they probably contain silicone. The silicone will build up eventually and dull and soften the finish over the wood furniture over time. They also can make it so fingerprints show on the finish.

It is a very costly thing to have a wood tabletop refinished. Therefore it is important that you maintain the finish on your wood. Keeping a good wax finish on the wood is vital to the protection of the wood. You should be purchasing a quality cabinetmakers type of wax that is designed for furniture made out of wood. You can find products like these in many woodworking stores as well as over the Internet. Some of the best brands of these types of wax are Liberon’s Butcher’s Wax, Antiquewax, and Goddard’s.

The best way to apply the wax in order to avoid streaking and blurring is to use wood finisher’s 0000 steel wool, which is free of oil. When you use cloth to apply the wax it can take too much effort. You should apply the wax in a circular motion and then finish the wax off by rubbing along the grain of the wood. On new wood furniture three to four light wax coats applied 8 hours apart is recommended in order to give the wood a good protective coating. For buffing you should use either an old t-shirt or terry towel.

It is recommended that you dust the wooden furniture every week by using an all cotton cloth that is dry. Do not use polishes or oils over the coat of protective wax. Make sure you quickly wipe up spills in order to prevent spotting on the wood. Also make sure to use coasters for glasses and vases, as well as pads for hot dishes. When the time has come where you cannot buff the coating of the wood to a shine any longer you should reapply a coat of wax.

If you are not sure what to use or how to treat your wooden furniture make sure to consult a professional. Repairing damaged wood on furniture can get expensive so make sure you take care of it.

Oak furniture.

We all want to create that luxurious feel in our homes and in my opinion real oak furniture is the way to do this. Oak furniture is not only beautifully handcrafted but extremely sturdy and dense. However do bear in mind when you move oak furniture in and out and around you home it will be be much heavier than any flat pack items you may have.

When choosing oak furniture there are a few things you need to remember. Firstly you need to be able to indentify from real oak pieces and the many imposter’s, real oak furniture will be solid hardwood with no shine chipboard, and mdf. The timber will also be kiln dried.

When seeking you furniture you should watch for the tidiness of the coatings and stableness of the joint, if the furniture is not crafted from a single piece of furniture make sure the joints are not visible. Ensure that any item you buy is strong enough to endure most everyday use.

If you purchase a chest of drawers or another piece with compartments check that the compartments have been made from the same piece of wood as the body. Double check the body has been secured right and not only glued on, a weak underside can give way easily and harm yout flawless furniture.

Not only can you now buy solid oak furniture from all good furniture shops and many independent shops you are now able to order furniture online.
